Fever is not an illness in itself but is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Fever is thought to be part of the body's natural defence mechanism. Some illnesses trigger the immune system(the body's defence system) to produce certain chemicals. These chemicals affect the heat-regulating centre in the brain in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.
