Onchocerciasis is an infection caused by the roundworm called Onchocerca volvulus, spread by the bite of an infected blackfly (Simulium). It is also called River Blindness because the fly that transmits infection breeds in rapidly flowing streams and the infection can cause blindness. Farmers in communities with high transmission and travellers in such areas are at risk of having the disease.
