The treatment for dracunculiasis may require the slow extraction of the worm, usually by winding it manually over several days on a small stick. This has the risk of rupture of the worm that can cause further serious itching and painful reaction. Usually, the use of an appropriate deworming agent, eg mebendazole, is necessary. Other treatment usually depends on complications that may occur.
