To diagnose sickle cell anaemia, your doctor will ask about your symptoms, examine you and may also ask you about your medical history and your family's medical history. The doctor will ask you to have a blood test. Your blood will be sent to a laboratory for testing. This will determine whether you have the HbS type of haemoglobin. A full blood count(FBC) will also be done-this will give information about your haemoglobin levels and how many of each of the different types of blood cell you have.
