Hydroxyurea is a medicine that may reduce the frequency of sickle cell crises. It stimulates the production of foetal haemoglobin (a type of haemoglobin that is found in unborn and newborn babies). Foetal haemoglobin helps reduce the number of sickle cells. Hydroxyurea is not suitable for everybody- ask your doctor if it is a suitable treatment for you.
