Patients should use cold compresses and lubricants, e. g. artificial tears, for comfort. Antiviral agents are not a proven treatment, except in cases of conjunctivitis caused by HSV. These are usually treated with topical antiviral agents. Treatment of acute bleeding conjunctivitis includes bed rest, cold compresses and analgesics. Antibiotics useful where bacterial infection is present. Consult your healthcare provider if you suspect you have a viral conjuctival infection.
