You can be infected by swallowing food that has been contaminated by the feaces of a recently infected cat. Eating poorly cooked or raw meat is a major source of human infections in many countries, and faecal contamination of hands is also a great risk factor, although cats are often blamed for spreading toxoplasmosis. In rare instances toxoplasmosis can contaminate blood transfusions and organs donated for transplantation.
