Congenital toxoplasmosis, in which a child becomes infected before birth, is a major route of transmission of the disease. Toxoplasmosis is also suspected of causing congenital disorders in the womb. Some babies with congenital toxoplasmosis have brain and nervous system abnormalities that can cause:convulsions, limp muscle tone, feeding difficulties, hearing loss and mental retardation. Inform your health care provider if you are pregnant with a history of exposure to the disease.
