The spread of taeniasis in humans starts with eating undercooked beef and pork containing the larval cysts. Intermediate hosts, eg cows and pigs, are infected with the tapeworm via the faeces of infected humans. Sometimes an infected human may swallow the eggs found in his own faeces. In this case, cysticerci can develop in tissues right through the body, particularly the brain.
