A severe complication of taeniasis, cystercercosis, can occur if Taenia solium eggs found in human faeces are swallowed. The eggs hatch in the small intestine and move to other tissues in the body form cysts. Taenia saginata doesn't usually cause cystercercosis. In children, the infection can be complicated by anaemia.
