A proportion of people recovering from yellow fever enter a toxic phase of the disease. Symptoms during this phase are far more serious and may be life-threatening, including fever, jaundice (yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes)- this is where the disease gets its name; some develop kidney failure, which may result in you no longer being able to pass urine. You may develop stomach pain with vomiting, have blood in your vomit or stools, start bleeding from your mouth, nose or eyes. Up to half of people who enter the toxic phase of the disease die within 10 to 14 days. Major organ failure, shock, delirium and coma usually occur before death.
