Oesophageal adenocarcinoma develops in the mucus-producing gland cells in the lining of the oesophagus. Around half of all oesophageal cancers are adenocarcinomas. It usually develops in the lower third of the oesophagus as it may be linked to acid from the stomach irritating the cells.
