Paralysis is the loss or impairment of muscle function in a part of the body. It can result from an injury or disease that interferes with the function of nerves or muscles. Paralysis can be complete or partial and can occur in one or both sides of the body. It can occur in just one area or be widespread. Paralysis of the lower half of the body is called paraplegia. Paralysis of the arms and legs is called quadriplegia.
