It is important to get treated for cirrhosis as soon as possible. Treatment cannot cure cirrhosis, but may prevent or delay further liver damage. Treatment may include medicines or surgery, depending on the cause and complications. To limit the damage of the liver and control symptoms, avoid alcohol, take medicine only when given by the doctor, get immunized if at high risk of infection and follow a low-sodium diet to help prevent fluid build-up.
