Cirrhosis is a serious condition in which scarring of the liver tissue leads to damage to the liver. The liver is a large organ in the upper abdomen. It has functions such as detoxifying harmful substances in the body, purifying blood and manufacturing vital nutrients. With mild cirrhosis, the liver can make repairs and continue its role in the body. With advanced cirrhosis, more scar tissue forms in the liver, making it impossible to function and leading to liver failure.
