Treatment for Graves' disease controls symptoms and decreases the production of excessive thyroid hormones and blocks its action. Treatment includes:radioiodine therapy (most often used), anti-thyroid drugs and thyroid surgery. Radioiodine therapy is not used in pregnant or breastfeeding women because it can be harmful to the foetus' thyroid and can be passed from mother to child in breast milk. Thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine usually cause hypothyroidism (overactive thyroid).
