Kwashiorkor is a condition caused by severe malnutrition. It mainly affects children, especially those around one year of age and occurs if the child is malnourished. Kwashiorkor is most common in cases where milk, eggs, meat, beans and peas are not given to children. A child with this disease will develop a swollen abdomen, brown hair, diarrhoea, tiredness and stunted growth. Seek treatment and advice IMMEDIATELY from the nearest health unit if your child has symptoms of kwashiorkor.
