If untreated, cervicitis may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, spontaneous abortion and cervical cancer. Cervicitis caused by gonorrhoea or chlamydia can spread to the uterine lining and fallopian tubes, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease(PID). PID can lead to female infertility due to damage of the reproductive organs.
