Atrial septal defects require several tests that assess the cardiac function and structure which enables the doctor to make an accurate diagnosis. The tests must involve an electrocardiogram which shows the electrical activity of the heart. Other tests include: a chest X-ray, heart MRI, echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation.
