Atrial septal defects are congenital abnormalities involving the upper chambers of the heart. In an atrial septal defect the wall separating these chambers has an opening that allows blood to flow from the left to right side of the heart. This opening is normally present before birth, which allows blood to bypass the lungs, but should close before birth.
