Complications of COPD occur in the later stages of the condition. These include respiratory failure which occurs when blood in the lungs cannot be oxygenated to adequately supply the body with oxygen. Another complication is cor pulmonale. This is a right sided heart failure as a result of the heart overworking itself to supply more oxygen to the body. Leg swelling may accompany the cor pulmonale.
