Risk factors for renovascular hypertension are mostly the same as for atherosclerosis. Risk factors for atherosclerosis are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heavy alcohol use, smoking, diabetes, cocaine abuse and old age. Connective tissue disease, eg fibromuscular dysplasia, is another cause of renal artery narrowing especially in women under 50. It tends to run in families.
