The complications of atrial septal defects are related to the changes in normal blood flow that occur in the defect. The shunting (movement) of blood from the left side of the heart to the right causes pulmonary overcirculation which leads pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure) as a complication. Other complications include arrhythmias, heart failure and strokes.
