Sepsis can be triggered by an infection in any part of the body. Normally, the body's defence system fights infection, but in severe sepsis, the body's normal reaction goes into an overdrive, leading to widespread inflammation and blood clotting in tiny vessels in the body. Most common sites of infection leading to sepsis are; lungs, urinary tract, abdomen and pelvis. Infection associated with sepsis include; pneumonia, flu, appendicitis, urinary tract infection, skin infections and meningitis .
