The treatment of atrial septal defects depends on the nature of the defect. If the opening is small and there are no symptoms there is no treatment required. However, if the opening is large and the heart has increased in size, surgical correction is necessary. Antibiotics should be administered after the surgery if the patient is undergoing other surgical procedures to prevent infective endocarditis.
