Surgery for atrial septal defect involves closing of the opening so as to restore normal flow of blood to the lungs. Surgical intervention is only done if irreversible changes in the lungs have not occurred, this emphasises the importance of early detection. A non-invasive surgical procedure is now possible- the surgeons use catheters to insert a closure device.
