Tests for confirmation of acute epiglottitis are only done if the condition is not life threatening. The tests are: taking a swab of the epiglottis and examining it, blood is collected and bacterial cultures grown, X-rays of the neck is the most important test and a chest X-ray can be done to check for pneumonia. Direct sight of the epiglottis is the best if possible.
