The epiglottis is a flap-like structure found at the back of the throat and its main function is to prevent food and liquid from going into the trachea(windpipe).Acute epiglottitis is the inflammation(reddening and swelling) of the epiglottis. This is usually due to infections and sometimes to throat burns and caustic injuries.
