Some of the illnesses that can damage sympathetic nerves and cause Horner syndrome are:stroke, spinal cord injury, Syringomyelia(fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord), migraines, trauma to the carotid artery in the neck area or injury during birth. Sometimes no specific cause can be found(idiopathic Horner syndrome).
