Pulmonary hypertension may be genetic, this is rare. The commoner risk factors are the underlying conditions that predispose to this condition. These include:illicit drug use(methamphetamines, cocaine, speed); left-sided heart failure; recurrent clots in the lungs; long-standing lung disease; weight loss drugs(Fen-phen) and rheumatological conditions(lupus, rheumatoid arthritis).Lesser risks are HIV, hyperthyroidism and advanced liver disease.
