Pulmonary edema may be caused by damage to the lungs. This might be caused by a direct blow, eg as with sportsmen or drivers in accidents. Other conditions may also lead to fluid building up in the body and lungs, eg kidney failure where fluid is not excreted from the body. Heart failure is another. Sportsmen who exercise at high altitudes are at risk.
