Bullous pemphigoid can be severe and fatal if it is untreated. The most common complication is a bacterial infection of the exposed skin surfaces. The infection may result in death in an elderly, debilitated person. Another complication is related to the medication used to treat the condition. Steroids can cause weight gain, weakening of bones, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. There may also be some psychological distress.
