Complications of acute epiglottitis are: bacterial pneumonia, obstruction of breathing, loss of consciousness, choking, meningitis, pericarditis (inflammation of the covering of the heart), skin abscesses, septic arthritis (bacterial infection of joint spaces) and even death.
