Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system attacks the melanocytes that produce skin pigment(colour). The immune system kills or disables the melanocytes. This is caused by variations in some genes. If you have vitiligo you may also be at risk of other autoimmune conditions. Some research suggests that vitiligo could be due to viral, neural or oxidative stress. This has not been proven.
