Approaches used to prevent mitral stenosis include prompt treatment of common throat infections with antibiotics since this is responsible for most valve diseases. Other measures are the use of antibiotics before dental procedures. Screening of symptomatic children suspected to have valve abnormalities from birth is also useful.
