To diagnose alcoholic liver cirrhosis, your doctor will ask about your symptoms, examine you, ask about your medical history and may refer you to a hepatologist-who specialises in the liver. You may need to have one or more of these tests:blood tests; ultrasound-uses sound waves to produce an image of your liver; CT scan-uses X-rays to make a 3-dimensional picture of your liver; MRI scan-uses magnets and radio waves to produce images of your liver; liver biopsy-a tiny piece of your liver is taken using a fine needle and examined under a microscope to check the severity of the damage; and a gastroscopy-a test that allows your doctor to look at your oesophagus for signs of complications, using a narrow, flexible, tube-like telescopic camera called an endoscope.
