Surgery to remove the abnormal cells in your oesophagus is called an oesophagectomy. It involves opening up your stomach and chest to take out the affected section of your oesophagus. Your stomach is then joined to the remaining part of your oesophagus. This is a major operation and it can take several months to recover fully.
