Your doctor may prescribe you different treatments for when you have a flare-up and for when you are in remission. When you are in remission, she/he will probably prescribe a medicine called an aminosalicylate to help keep your symptoms under control. If you have a moderate flare-up your doctor may increase the dose to try to control your symptoms. If this doesn't work or your flare-up is quite severe, your doctor may prescribe steroids. Steroids are very effective because they act quickly to reduce the inflammation. However, they can have serious side effects over the long-term so your doctor will gradually reduce the dose to the minimum needed to control your symptoms. If these treatments don't work, your doctor may give you medicines to suppress your immune system (immunosuppressants).
