The most common cause of peptic ulcer is a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori which cause inflammation in the stomach lining. Inflammation is a reaction to the infection causing part of the body to become swollen and /or painful. The inflammation reduces the layer of mucus that protects the stomach and small bowel from stomach acid and causes an ulcer.
