To diagnose ulcerative colitis, your doctor will need to know your symptoms, maybe your medical history and examine you. You may need to give a sample of faeces to check for bacterial infection and do a blood test for anaemia and signs of inflammation. You may be referred to a gastroenterologist for more tests.
