Gestational diabetes develops only during pregnancy. It occurs more often among women who have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, or have had previous still births or large babies. It usually develops during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Women who have gestational diabetes are at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes within 5 to10 years. They need to be monitored and control their blood sugar levels to remain healthy. Gestational diabetes resolves after the baby is delivered.
