Antenatal clinics - Special circumstances

The model of having four antenatal visits during a pregnancy does not always fit in pregnancies. There are certain recommendations that your health care giver may make during pregnancy that may vary this model.
Four those women who are older, there is a risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome. This is a medical condition associated with chromosome abnormality which results in a baby with a learning disability. You may therefore be advised to consider taking some tests that check for this condition during the first four months of your pregnancy.
Your doctor will evaluate the risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy and advice on the need of checking for the condition. This will normally happen between the 24th and 32nd week of gestation.
Mothers carrying twins or more will usually need to be followed up more frequently to detect any complications.
