Falls in children - Serious falls

Three factors determine the seriousness of a fall in a child:
1. The height from where the child has fallen from. The higher the height the more serious the fall. Limit access to height above 1.5 meters for children below the age of five and 2 meters for older children.
2. What the child lands on to. The harder the surface, the greater the danger. Hard surfaces such as concrete, ceramic tiles and compacted sand may cause a more hazardous fall than softer surfaces.
3. What the child hits as they fall. Sharp edges and corners of furniture, other equipment and glass can cause serious injuries. Always keep such items away from the play areas and away from places where children are likely to fall on them.
