Hookworms live in the small intestine of an infected person. They are spread through human faeces. The parasite enters via bare foot and moves to the lungs through the blood stream, causing itchy feet and dry cough. It will attach to the stomach wall and cause diarrhoea or stomach ache. If not treated, hookworms cause anaemia, development problems in children and low birth weight in babies born to infected mothers. Avoid hookworm-deworm often and don't go barefoot. Go to a health unit if you think you are infected.
