Symptoms of chancroid usually appear within a month of infection. Usually they include raised red bumps in the genital area. Within a few days the bumps can become filled with pus and these burst leaving painful open sores called ulcers. These can take weeks to heal without treatment. Chancroid can cause a lot of pain, bad scarring and damage to genital glands. Symptoms of chancroid are similar to signs of other infections so the only way to know if you have it is to get tested at a healthcentre-this helps make sure you get the right treatment.
