Cholera is a serious diarrhoeal disease transmitted by bacteria in food or drinks contaminated by the stool or vomit of someone who has the disease. Common sources of cholera are water and foods contaminated by cholera germs. Cholera causes sudden passing of watery faeces and vomiting, which leads to a quick loss of water from the body, body weakness and even death, sometimes within 3 to 4 hours of infection if not treated immediately. Cholera spreads and progresses fast. If you see any of these signs, rush to the nearest health unit. Prevent cholera by avoiding foods and drinks prepared, sold or served in dirty places and always using the toilet.
