4th degree burns are burns that extend through the skin to injure muscle, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and even bones. A person who gets a 4th degree burn should be rushed to the nearest health unit IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT take off any clothing that is stuck to the burn or soak the burn in water or apply any ointment. If possible, raise the burned area above the level of the heart and cover the burn with a cool wet sterile bandage or clean cloth until you receive medical assistance.
