Goitre, also known as bronchocele, is a swelling in the thyroid gland that can lead to a swelling of the neck or larynx. It is more common among women than men. The symptoms of goitre include swelling of the front part of the neck, protruding eyes and increased heartbeat. The common cause for goitre is iodine deficiency, though there are other types of goitre caused by immunity issues. Iodine deficiency leaves the thyroid gland unable to produce hormones, causing levels to fall. In response, the thyroid gland grows in size, causing goitre. Seek immediate medical attention if you see any signs of goitre.
