The risk of a mother getting tetanus in childbirth can be reduced by her having a tetanus vaccination at least 3 weeks before birth. The vaccination will work for 10 years so it is good for all women of child bearing age to have this vaccine. The risk of tetanus can also be reduced by ensuring clean equipment and practices during the birth, as well as immunization of child with DPT and other vaccines.
