Weaning is when a mother stops breastfeeding her baby and it can be done gradually. Signs that a baby is ready to wean often appear after the baby has learned to crawl or walk. When the baby sucks a few times and then stops breastfeeding, this is a sign the baby may be ready to wean. After weaning, breast milk can be replaced with foods containing protein, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates, such as eggs, cow milk, baby soya and fruits. What a child eats in the first 2-5years of life is very important to how the child develops, so seek advice from a health unit if you have more questions about your baby's diet.
